Free Typing Games
Typing games can make practice more consistent, more engaging, and more effective. Use the ideas on this page, then benchmark your progress with the main typing test.
Why Typing Games Improve Speed
Repetitive drills work - but they're boring. And boring practice leads to shorter practice sessions, which means slower improvement. Typing games solve this by putting you into a flow state where you stop thinking about typing and just type.
When you're genuinely engaged with a game, your brain stops consciously monitoring every keystroke. That's when muscle memory takes over. In practice, many learners stick with game-based practice longer than repetitive drills, which often leads to more total repetitions over time - and more repetitions usually mean more improvement.
Faster Reaction Time
Games that require you to type quickly under pressure build the reflexive speed that's hard to get from calm practice sessions.
Accuracy Under Pressure
When the game penalizes errors (missed enemy, lost points), you train yourself to balance speed with precision - the same skill employers measure.
Longer Practice Sessions
People consistently play games longer than they do drills. More time practicing means faster improvement - it's that simple.
Varied Vocabulary
Good typing games expose you to random, varied words rather than the same practice text. This builds more transferable speed than memorized passages.
A Blast From the Past
The first game we're building has a personal history: it was originally written for the Commodore VIC-20 - one of the earliest home computers - by our founder decades ago. The concept is simple: letters and words fall or fly toward you, and you have to type them before they reach you.
It's reminiscent of the classic arcade-style "zap the letters" games that typing teachers used in the 1980s and 90s - genuinely effective for improving accuracy because the feedback is instant and visceral. Miss a word and you feel it.
The goal is simple: keep it quick, accessible, and easy to use on everyday devices, with no downloads or account requirements.
